In A Spoonful of Water,
I found that Hudes use of interacting realities, in which both of the two
different worlds that he established in the play parallel each other. I found this to be most effective in the last
scene, scene 15. In the very ending of
this scene,Elliot is confessing to Yaz that he knew how to probe Odessa to
relapse and he intentionally engineered it because he was upset that the “good”
mom died and that he needs to get away because he knows if he stays where he
currently is he will become an addict as well and not be able to move forward,
while simultaneously John has just finished bathing Odessa and he lifts her and
holds her up and she looks like a radiant angel yet deathly sick. I think that Hudes chose to intertwine these
moments together because hey both parallel each other in that both Elliot and Odessa
are deeply sick and addicted, they have had their fallings, but by Elliot
deciding in that moment that he needs to go away and by having Odessa being
viewed and held up like a radiant angel, Hudes is creating hope and the chance
of renewal and transformation into some thing better. By recognizing that he has an issue and needs
to fix it, Elliot is already on the path to tat renewal, which balances John’s
renewal, hope and commitment to helping Odessa and helping himself and even
balances out Odessa, because she is “a radiant angel,” a symbol of hope in that
moment.
I like that you paralleled the two worlds that seemed most connected already. I tried really hard to find a parallel between the online world and the real life world, whereas you made a connection within the family that totally makes sense. I'm curious to see how a director would portray that radiance in Odessa but still make her look like she's dying and sickly. Anyway, very insightful, Yvette! :)
ReplyDeleteYvette great work! I really like how you mentioned the parallels between the worlds based on the sick states of Elliot and Odessa. I also think the same parallel idea can be applied to Yaz and John because they are both acting as a healthy, strong, support system. I really liked your analysis of Hudes purpose in intertwining the two different worlds because the idea of "hope" at the end of a heavy play really makes a difference.
